In addition to BHS seniors receiving tons of scholarships and awards this May, the BHS underclassmen have also had an impressive last couple of weeks. In order to be invited to apply for NHS, students also must have a 3.5 GPA or higher. For the Spanish Honor Society, not only did 4 students get inducted (juniors Lizzy Butler, Helen Gwynn, Alex Tung, and Jonathan Brandt), all four of them also received the Seal of Biliteracy, meaning that students are recognized for the ability to communicate with others who speak a language other than English, as well as understand the socio-cultural complexities that are involved in developing relationships. Students take 4 assessments in the four areas of communication: Listening and speaking, reading, and writing.
According to Senora Doural, to get into the honor society, “You have to maintain an honor average in the study of Spanish for a minimum of 3 semesters, be in the 10th grade or higher, demonstrate interest in learning the Spanish Language, and promote this learning beyond the high school years. You also must be curious about cultures and be motivated to learn about them, sign up for the advanced courses (Spanish IV and V), ask for nominations from the Spanish Teacher, and participate in projects throughout the year (organize Día de Los Muertos, teach a class in Spanish, etc.).”
