Brentwood fall sports have officially been underway for one month, so The Nest wanted to take a moment to catch up with the girls’ volleyball teams. How are their seasons going? Find out here.
The Teams
After last season, BHS’s volleyball program lost three seniors, and after this season, varsity will lose another three seniors: Emma Trostel, Katie Mackie, and Aoife Mahoney, who is new to Brentwood this year. Yet, the health of the program is looking good with seven new freshmen playing for both JV and varsity.
Trostel, who also plays club volleyball at Crossfire, is one of this year’s team captains and has just returned to playing volleyball after a troubling knee injury from a fall in a tournament back in January. In May she had surgery and has been working hard ever since to play her last season of volleyball with BHS.
“It’s pretty bittersweet,” Trostel said in regards to coming back with her newly rehabbed knee.
“I was really nervous coming into that first game because I was worried that my skill wasn’t going to come back to the same level,” said Trostel. “But it feels really good to be back on the court and just have the same fun that I used to.”
This year’s other team captain is junior Kelsea Hansard, who has been playing varsity volleyball since her freshman year. She also plays club volleyball for Crossfire. When being asked about her role as varsity co-captain, she said, “It’s definitely exciting. It’s been fun, we have a super young team, so it’s been nice for Emma and I to lead and bring our whole team together.”
New Coach
This year’s JV coach and varsity assistant coach is Kellie Schramm. While Coach Schramm is new to Brentwood volleyball, she’s been playing the sport most of her life. She actually played in college with varsity head coach Kenzie Cox. During the day, Schramm works as a doctor. Schramm enjoys being a Scorpio and challenging the girls. She is very excited to work with the girls this season.
The Record
On Friday, August 30th, right before the start of Labor Day weekend, both JV and varsity had their first games of the season with matches against Principia. Both teams played beautifully together as it was their first time working as a group. It was a sweep with both JV and varsity winning their games which was an exciting way to start off the long weekend.
After Labor Day, the varsity team played in the annual Hancock Tournament. After three long nights of games, the team managed to take third place in the tournament, which is how the team also finished the tournament last year.
On Sept. 10th, both JV and Varsity got another win against Valley Park.
Brentwood had a tough game against Bayless on Thursday, September 12th. Unfortunately, both teams lost. But on Sept. 17th, they played Hancock and won. Varsity swept with a 3-0 win and JV won 2-1.
Looking Forward
“I’ve been looking forward to the season for a while, honestly, ever since last season,” said Trostel. “I feel like this team has faced a lot of adversity already, but we all have the same end goal in mind and it’s really powerful to see that on the court.”
As for Hansard’s thoughts on the season, she emphasized how she really wants to beat Maplewood and wants to go further in districts this year. “I think we can make it to the championship if we work hard enough, so I’m excited for this year and next year,” she said.
Tonight both JV and varsity teams take on Collegiate in an away game, and tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 19th, they take on Crossroads in home games. Come on out and support the teams!
