The girl’s soccer team has their first home game this Friday, March 28th, at 4:30 against Wright City. This year the team has 16 players, 11 of whom are new to the high school team. This increase in players is great news for the returning players since last year’s small numbers often meant that the girls had to play with less than 11 on the field. Yet, despite last year’s small numbers, the team managed to still have a winning record. “Last season we finished with a record of 7-5, which was amazing considering we played most of our games with only 9 or 10 girls on the field,” said Assistant Coach Wildgrube.
Some of the new members on the team are freshmen who have been playing soccer since they were little while others have never played before such as freshman Olive Curdt. “Soccer’s just never been something I’ve done in my family. We’re just not a soccer family, so it’s something that’s definitely new,” she said. Yet, despite being new to the sport, she’s really enjoying it. “Out of all the sports I’ve done, it’s in my top three.”
As far as seniors go, the team has three this year: Katie Mackie, Faby Mora, and Emma Trostel. Trostel is injured and unable to play on the field but still wants to be involved with the team, so she will be acting as team manager.
“We are most excited with the number of girls that are part of the program,” said Assistant Coach Wildgrube. “This year we have more players, so we can actually field a team with correct positioning and have subs.”
The players feel the same way. “We have more than nine people on the field, we have a whole team and some subs. So I think that will definitely help people get the breaks they needed last year that they weren’t able to take,” said junior Kensington Curd, who usually plays forward and midfield for the team. Curd also mentioned that with more players this year, the girls will have more opportunities to play the positions they want to.
“I am excited to see Kensington Curd reach 100 goals and see her continue to develop and lead our team,” said Coach Wildgrube.
Just as reaching 100 pins in wrestling or scoring 1000th points in basketball are huge high school career milestones, scoring 100 goals is a huge feet. The thing is, Curd is already at 94 goals from just her freshman and sophomore years. Reaching that 100th goal might even happen in just her first game!
Come out this Friday to see the girls in their first home game!
