Last Wednesday, September 4th, the Brentwood boys’ varsity soccer team beat Gateway Stem 5-3. This game was Brentwood’s first home game of the season. The day before, the team had played DeSoto away and lost 1-2, so now the team’s current record is 1-1.
In Wednesday’s game, seniors Lucas Kelley, Jackson Curd, Nick Reeds, and junior Tyler Nelson contributed to this score. Nelson’s goal, the first for him this season, was from outside the box, and he scored it minutes before halftime. “It was lucky,” Nelson said.
In the first half, Brentwood scored 4 goals total, and 1 in the second half. Yet, the game could have gone way different since Gateway Stem scored two of their own goals. It was a clumsy game for them, and without these mistakes, the score would’ve been 3-3. While the game was a clumsy one for Gateway Stem, Nelson was grateful to the team for even showing up. “I mean, they didn’t even have a full team at the start of the game, so it was nice that they came with a good mindset and just wanted to play soccer,” Nelson said. “It was just a bit unlucky that they got those own goals.”
Even though the season just started, the team is feeling hopeful for its future successes this season. “We’re definitely way stronger than we were last year,” said Nelson. “We’ve got a lot of really good seniors. We’ve grown a lot. Everybody knows each other.”
Today, September 10th, Brentwood has a home game against Maplewood, and both varsity and JV will be playing. Varsity plays at 4 and JV plays at 5:30.
