The end of the school year is just 7 weeks away! Which means, summer is just around the corner. This summer, most students will be hanging out with friends and family, going on fun adventures, and overall having a good time, but for some, a big thing that makes this summer different from ones in the past is the ability to get a summer job.
Summer jobs not only provide money, they can also be a fun way interact with people, especially when working with friends. In Missouri, the age someone can start working is 14 to 15. Depending on the job and the person’s age, there might be some restrictions, including obtaining a work certificate and following specific hours and job limitations, according to the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
For Brentwood students, one popular place to work in the summer is the Brentwood Swim Club.
“It’s a very easy, good first job,” said sophomore Luellen Forney. “I think it’s good for a first job if you’re younger, like a freshman or sophomore.” This will be Forney’s second summer working at the Brentwood Swim Club as a lifeguard. Forney thinks that being a lifeguard is a fun job because she is never really bored since something is always going on, good or bad.
Another local business that employs a lot of teens from Brentwood is the Sno Wonderful snow cone stand.
“I think the best thing is that you get free snow cones as often as you want,” said sophomore Nadia Woodman, who will be working at the Sno Wonderful this summer. Although this will be Woodman’s first summer working there, she knows many people who have worked there in the past, and she has friends who work there currently. Sno Wonderful is also owned by one of Woodman’s friends, so this job will be a nice environment to work in. Woodman is unsure if she will return next summer as she will turn 16 and may want to apply for higher-paying jobs.
Some Brentwood students are planning to work with their families this summer.
“My plans for the summer are to help out with my family business,” said freshman Shaun R. Hudson. In addition to helping with his family’s funeral home business, he plans on going to church.
Freshman Ben Sarmiento-Rizo is also planning on working with his mom this summer. “I’m working at a restaurant, and it’s incredible,” he said. His summer job will be working at the restaurant Amigos Cantina located in Kirkwood. Sarmiento-Rizo thinks that he will have a good time working there because he knows a lot of people who work there, including his mom.
Another type of job some students are planning on for work is through sports. For example, freshman Xavier Declama’s summer job will be working as an umpire managed by an organization, starting later this month and ending in June or July. He can choose his schedule for when he wants to work, and the pay depends on how old you are. “The younger the kids, the less money you get,” said Declama, and “If there are fewer umpires, then you get more money for that game.”
As summer is getting closer, there will be new experiences and opportunities for students. Whether it’s working at a family business, lifeguarding, or working with food and sports. These jobs will help people earn money and make new friends or memories.
Still wanting to find a summer job?
According to Mrs. Diaz, there is a job bulletin board in the breezeway between building B and C where businesses post hiring opportunities for high school students – particularly in retail, food service, lifeguarding, babysitting, nannying, and lawn care. If you would like to apply for any of these kinds of jobs, the application procedures are typically detailed on the websites listing the jobs.
